I found a quote in an article I'm reading that describes another one of the ridiculous situations in the modern world economy:

Jeff Rubin has a book out "Why Your World is About to Get a Whole Lot Smaller" that may be of interest. He points out that this sort of nonsense is only possible with cheap energy for the transportation. As the cost of oil rises, foolishness like this with price itself out of existence.
